Date Difference Calculator
Calculate the difference between two dates in days, weeks, hours, minutes, and approximate months or years.
Run tool
This date difference calculator finds the calendar span between any two calendar dates entered in standard YYYY-MM-DD format. When you provide two dates, the tool determines the earlier and later endpoints to report a nonnegative difference in whole calendar days. Entering identical dates produces a difference of zero days. Leap days within the interval are included in the day count, making spans across leap years accurate. Along with the total number of calendar days, the tool converts the calculated span into derived time units, including whole weeks, hours, minutes, and seconds. It also provides approximate values for months and years based on standard averages of 30.44 days per month and 365.25 days per year, alongside decimal weeks. An indicator notes whether the range spans across differing years where at least one endpoint year is divisible by four. If a date entry is invalid or formatted incorrectly, the tool flags the issue clearly.
Instructions
- Enter the first date using the YYYY-MM-DD format, or leave the default value.
- Enter the second date using the YYYY-MM-DD format, or leave the default value.
- Run the calculation to compute the calendar span between the two selected dates.
- Review the resulting total day count alongside derived values for weeks, hours, minutes, seconds, months, and years.
Examples
- Comparing 2024-01-01 and 2024-12-31 returns 365 calendar days (including the February 29 leap day), equivalent to 52 whole weeks and 1 day, or 8,760 hours.
- Comparing 2024-01-01 and 2025-01-01 returns 366 calendar days, 52.3 weeks, 12.02 approximate months, and 1.00 approximate year.
- Comparing identical dates such as 2024-06-15 and 2024-06-15 returns a 0-day difference.
FAQ
Does the order of the two dates matter?
No. The calculator automatically orders the dates chronologically and reports a nonnegative day count regardless of which date is placed in the first field.
How are leap years factored into the date calculation?
The calculation accounts for actual leap days between the selected dates. For example, the span from 2024-01-01 to 2025-01-01 counts 366 full days because 2024 includes February 29.
Can I calculate time differences with hours or time zones?
The inputs accept calendar dates only (YYYY-MM-DD) without time-of-day or time-zone components. Displayed hours, minutes, and seconds are derived directly from the full-day total.
How are approximate months and years calculated?
Approximate values use standard averages: 30.44 days per month and 365.25 days per year, rounded to two decimal places.
