Truncate Text

Trim and shorten text by characters, words, or sentences with an optional custom suffix.

Run tool

Truncate Text shortens articles, snippets, excerpts, and paragraphs to fit specific character, word, or sentence limits. Paste your source content into the input box and set the target limit. You can choose whether to trim by character count, whitespace-separated word count, or sentence segments ending with standard punctuation marks like periods, exclamation marks, and question marks. An optional suffix, such as three dots, attaches directly to the end of any shortened text to signal that additional material was cut. When your input is already shorter than or equal to the designated limit, the tool returns the text unchanged without appending the suffix. When content exceeds the limit, the tool extracts the required portion, trims trailing whitespace, and adds your suffix. The result panel displays the shortened output alongside original and final character counts, making it easy to prepare clean summaries, teasers, and preview snippets for publishing.

Instructions

  1. Paste or type your content into the Text field.
  2. Enter a target numeric value in the Limit field.
  3. Choose whether to count by characters, words, or sentences.
  4. Provide a custom suffix or keep the default ellipsis.
  5. Submit the form to review the truncated text and character metrics.

Examples

  • Shorten a 500-character article intro to 120 characters with a trailing ellipsis for preview cards.
  • Trim a blog draft to the first 25 words to create a clean search teaser.
  • Extract the first two complete sentences from a review for display in a sidebar.

FAQ

Does the suffix add to the final character limit?

Yes. The tool keeps content up to the specified limit and then appends the suffix, so the total character count will include the suffix length.

What happens if my text is shorter than the limit?

If your input length is less than or equal to the limit, the text is returned as is, and no suffix is attached.

How does sentence mode identify sentence boundaries?

Sentence mode splits text using terminal punctuation marks such as periods, exclamation marks, and question marks.

What happens if I submit an empty input?

Empty input produces empty output, and the summary indicates that no shortening was required.
