Typing Speed Test
Calculate typing speed, character accuracy, and adjusted words per minute from your typed sample and elapsed time.
Run tool
Calculate your typing speed and character accuracy by comparing your entered text against a reference passage. This tool evaluates total typed characters over a measured duration, converting your performance into words per minute using the standard convention of five characters per word.
You can paste custom reference text or use the default pangram. Once you enter your completed typed text and specify the elapsed time in seconds, the tool compares the two character sequences. It calculates raw typing speed, character accuracy percentage, and an adjusted speed that accounts for typos.
Elapsed time can range from 0.25 seconds up to 24 hours (86,400 seconds), making it suitable for quick sprint tests as well as extended transcription exercises. Results display gross speed, accuracy, and adjusted speed rounded to one decimal place, giving you a clear metric to track typing consistency and keyboard efficiency over time.
Instructions
- Paste your prompt passage into the Reference text field, or leave it blank to use the default sample sentence.
- Enter the text you produced during the session into the Typed text field.
- Enter the duration of the test in seconds in the Elapsed seconds field.
- Click the calculate button to review your words per minute, character accuracy, and adjusted speed.
Examples
- Typing the default 44-character reference text in 30 seconds yields a speed of 17.6 words per minute with 100.0% accuracy.
- Typing 250 characters with minor spelling mistakes over 60 seconds yields a raw speed of 50.0 words per minute, a 95.0% accuracy score, and an adjusted speed of 47.5 words per minute.
FAQ
How does the tool calculate words per minute?
Typing speed is calculated using the standard industry standard of five characters per word. The total character count of your typed text is divided by five, then divided by elapsed minutes.
What is adjusted typing speed?
Adjusted typing speed multiplies your raw words per minute by your character accuracy ratio, providing a net speed score that reflects both speed and precision.
What happens if the reference text field is left empty?
If no reference text is provided, the tool automatically uses the default pangram: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."
What is the acceptable range for elapsed time?
You can enter any elapsed time from 0.25 seconds up to 86,400 seconds (24 hours).
