Steps for checking domain registration data

  1. Enter the domain name you want to check. The field is optional, so leaving it blank uses example.com as the example input.

  2. Submit the lookup. The tool trims surrounding spaces, removes trailing dot characters, converts internationalized domain characters to ASCII, and changes the result to lowercase before validation.

  3. Make sure the normalized domain is valid. It must be a dotted domain name no longer than 253 characters. Each label can contain no more than 63 characters and must begin and end with a letter or digit.

  4. Review the returned information. The lookup obtains RDAP bootstrap information from a cache when available, or retrieves it from IANA when needed. It then selects the first matching top-level-domain service entry and uses its first HTTPS URL to query the authoritative service.

  5. Read the available registration fields, including domain status, registrar information, nameservers, event dates, and DNSSEC delegation status. Nameserver names are shown in lowercase and sorted order when they are returned.

If the domain is invalid, the authoritative service cannot be selected, the selected service does not use HTTPS, or the HTTP request fails, the lookup returns an unsuccessful result. Correct the input or try again when the issue is temporary.

Reading a successful or unsuccessful result

A successful result indicates that the selected authoritative RDAP service responded and that the tool extracted registration values available in that response. The set of displayed fields depends on the domain and service, so a successful lookup may omit a registrar detail, event date, nameserver, or DNSSEC value.

Interpret the output as registration information, not as a DNS record response or address-resolution result. The lookup can therefore provide registration data without performing an A-record check. Bootstrap information may be reused from the runtime cache for up to 24 hours after it is fetched, so a later lookup may not obtain fresh bootstrap information during that period.

An unsuccessful result does not establish that the domain is unregistered. It identifies a boundary in the lookup process, such as validation, authoritative service selection, HTTPS eligibility, or an HTTP request problem.

Worked example

You want to review registration information for a domain and enter its name with uppercase letters and a final dot.

Enter Example.COM. and submit the lookup. The input is normalized before validation, so the lookup uses the lowercase domain without the trailing dot.

The result should show an unsuccessful lookup or available registration fields such as status, registrar information, nameservers, event dates, and DNSSEC delegation status, depending on the authoritative response.

  • A successful response can omit registration fields, registrar details, event dates, nameservers, or DNSSEC values when they are not available in the RDAP response.

Common errors

  • A URL can fail because the input is expected to be a dotted domain name. Remove the scheme and path, then submit a value such as example.com; surrounding spaces and trailing dots are prepared automatically, but the resulting domain still has to satisfy the length and label rules.
