What the reading time calculator does

A reading time calculator helps you estimate how long a text may take to read, speak, or scan. Paste an article, essay, script, or draft into the text area, then adjust the words-per-minute setting when you want the reading estimate to reflect a particular pace. How to calculate reading time

1. Paste or type your text into the input area. Text is optional, so you can also leave it blank when you want to see the empty-input result.
2. Set the words-per-minute value if the default pace does not suit your use case. If you do not provide a value, the tool uses 238 words per minute. For nonblank text, the effective setting is converted to a whole number and kept between 50 and 1,000.

How to read the results

Reading time is calculated in seconds and rounded up to the next whole second. When the result is under one minute, it is displayed in seconds; otherwise, it is displayed in minutes and, when needed, remaining seconds.

Speaking time uses a fixed rate of 130 words per minute and is reported in whole minutes. A nonblank text receives a minimum speaking estimate of 1 minute. Scanning time uses 600 words per minute and is also reported in whole minutes, with a minimum of 1 minute for nonblank text.

The word count is based on the tool's word matching after surrounding whitespace is removed. The character count includes the full nonblank input, including whitespace and other characters. These results describe the calculator's counting and timing rules; they are estimates rather than a promise that every reader, speaker, or scanner will use the same pace.

Worked example

A writer is checking whether a draft is suitable for a short reading slot before revising its length.

Paste a nonblank article draft into the calculator and keep the default pace of 238 words per minute.

With a 119-word draft, the reading time is 30 sec (119 divided by 238 gives 0.5 minutes, or 30 seconds), the speaking estimate is 1 minute, and the scanning estimate is 1 minute. The result also reports the word count and the character count, and the reading display uses seconds below one minute.

Limitations

• The displayed times depend on the selected pace and the calculator's counting rules. Speaking and scanning use fixed rates, while reading time is rounded up; the estimates may not match an individual person's pace.

Common errors

• If a custom pace appears not to affect a blank or whitespace-only input, check the text first: that input follows the zero-valued empty branch. For nonblank text, use a numeric words-per-minute value within the supported 50-to-1,000 range.
