Byte Converter

Convert digital storage quantities across binary units, IEC prefixes, and SI decimal byte units.

Run tool

This byte converter translates digital storage values between standard data measurement units. You can calculate equivalents across traditional binary units like bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes, as well as explicit binary prefix units such as kibibytes, mebibytes, gibibytes, tebibytes, and pebibytes. The tool also supports International System of Units standards from bytes through terabytes.

Standard binary units and IEC prefixes apply a multiplier of 1,024 at each step, while decimal SI units scale by powers of 1,000. When converting, the tool computes the equivalent value directly between the selected units. By default, the tool opens with a starting value of 0, converting from megabytes to gigabytes.

The output display gives both an exact numeric measurement rounded to ten decimal places and a clean summary line formatted to six significant digits. You can use the result to compare file sizes, estimate storage needs, or check capacity specifications.

Instructions

  1. Enter the numeric value you want to convert in the Value field.
  2. Select the starting measurement unit in the From unit dropdown list.
  3. Choose the target measurement unit in the To unit dropdown list.
  4. Click the run button to perform the calculation and review the converted result.

Examples

  • Convert 1024 Kilobytes (Kb) to Megabytes (Mb) to get 1 Mb.
  • Convert 1 Gibibyte (Gib) to Bytes (B) to get 1,073,741,824 B.
  • Convert 500 Gigabytes SI (Gb Si) to Terabytes SI (Tb Si) to get 0.5 Tb Si.

FAQ

What is the difference between binary units and SI decimal units?

Binary units and IEC prefixes use base-2 multipliers where each step equals 1,024 units, whereas SI decimal units use base-10 multipliers where each step equals 1,000 units.

What happens if no number is entered?

The tool automatically applies a default value of 0 and calculates the conversion for that value.

How are the converted numbers rounded?

The numeric result is rounded to ten decimal places, while the accompanying text display presents the converted value formatted to six significant digits.
