VAT Calculator

Calculate value-added tax by adding a tax percentage to net prices or removing VAT from gross totals.

Run tool

This VAT calculator lets you add value-added tax to a net figure or extract it from a gross total. When preparing an invoice for international clients, auditing supplier bills, or estimating cross-border purchase costs, you can compute taxes using any custom rate. To calculate VAT, enter a non-negative monetary sum, specify the percentage rate, and choose whether to add tax to a net figure or remove tax from an inclusive total. Leaving inputs blank applies the default base amount of zero and a standard twenty percent rate. The calculation rounds monetary values to two decimal places using standard half-up rounding. After running the tool, the breakdown clearly displays the net amount, the tax portion, the gross total, and the applied rate. This summary simplifies price reconciliation, sales tax estimation, and receipt verification across diverse accounting tasks. Both inputs accept finite numbers, providing immediate clarity on net and gross pricing structures.

Instructions

  1. Enter the monetary sum in the Amount field.
  2. Enter the applicable tax percentage in the VAT rate field, or leave it set to the default rate.
  3. Select the calculation direction to either add tax to a net figure or remove tax from a gross figure.
  4. Click the calculate button to review the computed net sum, tax amount, and gross total.

Examples

  • Adding 20% VAT to a net price of 100.00 yields a VAT amount of 20.00 and a gross total of 120.00.
  • Removing 20% VAT from a gross price of 120.00 extracts a net amount of 100.00 and a VAT portion of 20.00.
  • Adding 5.5% VAT to an amount of 50.00 produces a tax value of 2.75 and a final total of 52.75.

FAQ

How does the calculation mode change the result?

Choosing to add VAT treats the input as a net price and calculates tax on top of it. Choosing to remove VAT treats the input as a gross price inclusive of tax and extracts the pre-tax net base and tax portion.

How are fractional cents and decimals handled?

All monetary outputs are rounded to two decimal places using standard half-up rounding.

What happens if an input field is left empty?

The tool uses default values of 0 for the amount, 20% for the tax rate, and the add mode for the calculation direction.

Can I enter negative numbers for the amount or tax rate?

No. The amount and VAT rate must be finite, non-negative numbers.
